Peter Dreher

German

1932-2020

Peter Dreher (1932–2020) was a unique painter in post-war German art, renowned for his extreme concentration and philosophical contemplation. Born in Mannheim, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe from 1950 to 1956 and began teaching there in 1965, becoming an influential lecturer in painting until 1997. His artistic practice forms a profound and silent contrast to the grand narratives represented by contemporaries such as Gerhard Richter.

Dreher is best known for his four-decade-long series Tag um Tag guter Tag (Day by Day, Good Day). In this project, he depicted the same water glass over 5,000 times. Each painting strictly adheres to a 10 x 8 inch format, centrally composed with a uniform palette, demonstrating intense consistency. Yet, it is within this rigorous framework that subtle variations in light, brushwork, and atmosphere become apparent, creating the core tension of the series. For Dreher, repetition was not a limitation but a means of liberation and a philosophical impulse, allowing him to focus on the purity of the act of painting itself. He also applied his distinct realist style to series of landscapes, interiors, and still lifes.

Following his first solo exhibition at the Städtische Kunsthalle Mannheim in 1954, Dreher's work has been widely exhibited at major European institutions, including the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Musée d'Art Contemporain et Moderne in Geneva, and MK Galleries in the UK. A major thematic exhibition at White Cube, London in 2015 fully introduced his impactful aesthetics of repetition to an international audience. His works are held in the collections of authoritative institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pinault Collection, cementing his status as a master of contemplative practice in contemporary art.
